SteelFocus Privacy Policy

SteelFocus is a browser productivity extension that blocks destinations selected by the user, applies optional schedules and usage limits, and runs focus sessions. SteelFocus is designed to operate locally and does not include remote analytics, advertising, or account services.

Data SteelFocus handles

SteelFocus stores the following data in Chrome’s local extension storage when needed to provide features the user configures:

  • Blocking rules, schedules, redirects, custom blocked-page messages, and extension preferences.
  • An optional salted password hash used for local friction controls. SteelFocus never stores the plaintext password.
  • Usage counters required by user-created daily usage-limit rules.
  • Temporary bypass grants while they are active.
  • If the user explicitly enables local insights: visited domain names, blocking and usage activity, focus-session outcomes, and bypass justifications. Full URL paths, query strings, and fragments are not retained in insight records.
  • If the user separately grants the optional Top Sites or History permission: on-device suggestions used to create rules. The source history entries are not copied into SteelFocus storage.

SteelFocus does not run in incognito mode.

How data is used

Data is used only to provide and improve the user-facing functionality described above inside the installed extension. Data is not sold, shared with third parties, used for advertising, used for credit or lending decisions, or transferred to external servers.

Limited Use disclosure

SteelFocus’s use of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Chrome API data is used only to provide or improve SteelFocus’s single-purpose productivity features and is not transferred for unrelated purposes.

Permissions

  • storage saves local rules, preferences, counters, and any opted-in insights.
  • alarms schedules focus phases, rule schedules, usage resets, and temporary bypass expiry.
  • declarativeNetRequest, tabs, and <all_urls> enforce user-created blocks and redirects and account for usage-limit rules across sites.
  • topSites and history are separate optional permissions used only after a user gesture to show local rule suggestions.
  • notifications is optional and requested only when the user enables focus reminders.

Retention and deletion

Local insight collection is off until the user makes a first-run choice. The user can disable collection, select a retention window of up to 365 days, or delete all analytics events, focus history, and bypass logs from SteelFocus settings. Record counts are also hard-capped. Resetting SteelFocus or uninstalling the extension removes extension-managed local data according to Chrome’s storage behavior.

Security

SteelFocus restricts extension storage to trusted extension contexts, validates imported settings, rejects unsafe URL schemes and unsafe regular expressions, and stores optional passwords using a salted, versioned PBKDF2-SHA-256 record.

Changes and support

Material changes will be reflected by updating this policy and its effective date. Until a public support URL is configured for the Chrome Web Store listing, support requests should use the support channel shown on that listing.
